Professional ‘Twerk’ dancers critique Miley Cyrus’ twerking dance moves

Miley Cyrus parties all over the U.S.A., but where did she learn how “twerk” dance?   In New Orleans, of course.  In a recent interview on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, she told the host that she learned how to “twerk” while filming a movie in the Big Easy.  The pop sensation posted a video of her “twerking” in a unicorn costume on her Facebook page.  It’s since become a huge hit on YouTube.   Miley dances to rapper J-Dash’s hit, “Wop” in the video.
Her video is helping to put “twerking” on the national map, but what exactly is it? News with a Twist’s Kenny Lopez went to the New Orleans Society of Dance to get the 411 on “twerking”.
“Twerking is an original New Orleans dance style.  It’s typically done to bounce music.  It’s a form of bounce dancing.  DJ’s and bounce artists would call out certain dance movements that they wanted to see the crowd do.  In doing so, the term, “twerk” was born,”   Millisia White, President and Artistic Director of New Orleans Society of Dance Baby Doll Ladies, said.
White said many twerk moves involve shaking the hips and the butt.
Baby Doll Lady Coture Madness and Baby Doll Lady Jewelz are professional twerkers.  They demonstrated their moves to DJ Hektik’s “heckslusive” bounce remix to “Wop”.   These ladies feel Miley’s very skilled at “twerking”.
“I think the best thing she did was the wobble move, it was pretty good,”  White said.
They even liked her unicorn costume.  “I think she did good with wearing a costume.  It made you not think of her pop persona.  It really made you pay attention to her dance,”  White said.
Overall they are fans of Miley’s moves.   “She let the world know that she learned how to move in New Orleans, baby.  Well done, Miley.   Keep twerking,”  White said.
If you’d like to see the Baby Doll Ladies perform, check out their upcoming shows at the U.S. Mint on May 31st, June 14th, and June 28th.   For more information, neworleanssocietyofdance.com.
The three part progression show chronicles the transformational eras of New Orleans’ century year old, endearing Mardi Gras tradition of doll masquerading, music and dancing.
Miley Cyrus recently released her new single with Snoop Lion called, “Ashtrays and Heartbreaks”.
